A friend of mine posted a link in Google Reader yesterday that was to a New York Times article “You Heart N.Y.”. Needless to say, the concept of recreating the “I <3 N.Y.” brand was very interesting. I looked at a few of the joke or gag ones that included a hoagie and Yelp Symbol, and knew I could do substantially better.
The interpretation of the “Heart NYC” redesign is surrounding the ubiquitous representation of the MTA. I made a cognizant effort to maintain the geometric proportions of the simplistic Akzidenz Grotesk number and circle while configuring it into the heart. The first representation is accurate to scale and mimics the current MTA signs. I chose to be a little more playful with by utilizing the oversized “NY” to create line segmentations and new shapes. I thought both of these were my most successful images within my though process and the to scale version is my favorite.
